Tuning worlds in Japan – Saga

Sunday 6th May 2012

Hugh here in Japan. We had a workshop in a nursery school on a Sunday afternoon in Saga, led by the wonderful Makoto Nomura and me. Ten people came along, mostly in 30′s and 40′s and one boy aged 3 came with his aunt. We played many games including counting to three, counting to ten and shared inventions and we also did some TUNING WORLDS. Six people made individual verbal responses and also played some sounds while I played an A (220) on the melodica. We then recorded two Tuningworlds group improvisations, one short and one long, including use of cardboard box, percussion, piano, water, singing, talking…

Day 2 – 19/11/11

Tuning Worlds at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival

Sat in a room at Huddersfield University with Matt, helpfully assisting, for 5 hours collecting. Like folk song collectors from a hundred years ago, but collecting from people who don’t know that they know any folk songs. Eventually everyone comes up with an answer to the three questions and some of them take a card away to make another answer later (or give to somebody else). In the foyer all afternoon is a PGCE led ‘pop-up-art-school’ project with lots of family groups making books and boxes and cards, so we had lots of traffic of composers, students, children, audience, families.

  1. What Tunes Your World?
  2. How Old Are You?

(today we had people aged from 3 to 72 and someone aged ‘a million and three’)

3. Would you like to respond to the A drone played on the sruti box?

After we had just got the sruti box out we had another member of staff bring in a small singing bowl – sadly not an ‘a’ but a very nice tone.

A series of 5 pieces and lots of chat.

1) Tom (electric guitar) accompanied by Steve. Sustain and suspense.

2) Joe (electric drums) accompanied by Emma.

3) For the third one we wrote a ‘song’ using words that the drone made us think about. Also a short discussion about how it didn’t make sense! It took several tasks to get it how we wanted it. Accompanied by Lizzie

Slow and painful and scary

Relaxing and rainfull and fast

4)Sophie on alto sax, accompanied by Jess. Confident and exploratory playing.

5) Full group improvisation, with Jordan on the drone. Started off very quietly, then clarinet and electric guitar, some whispering, coughing, shuffling, a violin, a flute, some voices, talking, body percussion, sticks, glissandi, singing voices, whispering, chant, conversations, a real mix, scale on the clarinet, tunes, talking, shuffling, louder voices, laughter, solos coming out of the mix for a moment, more giggling, talking, stamping, a clap, an ending. Lasted 3 and a half minutes – the longest piece.

This final piece was very interesting in the way that it was an improvisation with no rules except for the fact that it had a drone. Some of the group seemed comfortable with this and played and engaged and listened. Others didn’t quite know what to do and looked and evidently felt unsure. Like with the first question (‘what tunes your world’) they were not sure where they stood or what was expected of them. The longer the piece went in it felt as of some of the group thought that I would eventually tell them to stop, but of course I didn’t and at the end I said well done and that we would put that recording, alongside the others on the tuning worlds website. (Here it is.)

This project is not about doing the expected or doing what usually might happen in a music class or doing something right, it is about exploring responses to the drone and here is a great one by a group of 30 young people.

Scissett Middle School

A year 7 class of 27 students.

All aged 11 and 12 and local to the school. Plus class teacher (Judy Sims) two Huddersfield University students in the class (one music and one PGCE) and, briefly, a photographer from the local paper.

I discovered that when in a group setting and asking the question ‘What Tunes Your World’  the first person (and sometimes the first two or three) are reluctant to answer. They want to know what it means, and a context into which to put it. I explain that I don’t know how to explain the question until they have answered, and while this doesn’t satisfy them, they can see that I am being genuine in my request. So then when eventually someone does answer the following responses usually come quite quickly.

Before we made the pieces I asked what the group thought of the sound of the drone.

‘It was really annoying’

‘It was quite comforting’

‘a strange aura about the sound’

‘it doesn’t sound like the instrument is actually playing’

‘it sounds like it’s broken’.

We made six different pieces

1) The first piece is initiated by Ben. He uses his feet and it was going to be a duet with the sruti box, but at some point everyone joined in with him – a great stampede.

6) Ben (2) without drone. As this was a very interesting orchestration involving a number of instruments we decided to record it again without the drone.

…and in the very last minutes of the day, Michael popped in.  He was on his way to catch a train (kind of) but still gave a lovely vocal improvisation.  He had just come from a concert that was all about tuning and the overtone series, and here’s what he said:

Had a visit late in the afternoon from Hannah and Gillian.  Both improvised on the piano, which turned out to be slightly out of tune on our drone pitch – never mind. Gillian is a composer, but Hannah said “oh, I’m just a waitress…but I play the clarinet”, and obviously the latter is more important to her than the former.

Here’s Hannah’s piano improvisation, with Ahmed on sruti box

…and here’s Gillian’s

Hannah grew up in the Orkneys

and Gillian in New York and Montana (she didn’t tell me where in Montana)

and both now live in Manchester

I asked them both “what tunes your world” and this is what they said:

Just had a visit from Robert Worby from Radio 3.  He said hello but was on his way to an event so I didn’t manage to lure him in to take part – yet!

Almost at the same moment, Pat Allison and his mate Chris came in.  I asked them ‘what tunes your world’ and here is what they said:

And then they did a lovely improv

Today I had a visit from Pia from Vienna, who is just starting a PhD in composition here at Huddersfield.  She got quite excited by the sruti box, and instead of responding to the Drone, she picked up the sruti box and started to improvise with it… quite quickly the drone disappeared

I asked Pia about what tunes her world, and being a musician she had to think carefully before answering.  ”Things like this” she said, meaning the joy she had just found in the box.  Then, after a while, she said

“The world tunes me”

Today, no school visit, so I’m sitting in Music Seminar 3 here in the CAB at Huddersfield University.  Brand new building, very shiny and light, with Music on one side and Art & Design on the other.  We are on the ground floor, located directly off the main atrium.

Atrium in the Creative Arts Building at Huddersfield University

Despite all the posters and signs, people are shy and the big lesson from this week is about aesthetics and buzz.  The space we’re in is important and needs to attract attention to itself – LOADS of attention.  And we need to find ways of creating buzz. People need to feel they are missing out on a great opportunity if they don’t take part…  This is learning for the future.
