Hurling – St Columb Major

Location – St Columb Major Market Square
Experts – Colin Rescorla, Colin Roberts and Alison Roberts - Davies
Participants – Robert Chilton, Teo Ormond - Skeaping, Laura Smith, Gerry Cawley and Joe Cawley

At one time hurling was played all over Cornwall; inter village or town matches, matches between miners and farmers and even between single and married men. Today the only place that the sport is played as it once was is in St Columb Major every Shrove Tuesday and the second Saturday afterwards (a children’s match is also played in St Ives during the Feast Day celebrations)

The origins of hurling are vague and somewhat unknown but it is thought that it could have developed out of a pagan ritual or fertility rite during the onset of spring.

Colin Rescorla is the last living person able to make the hurling ball in its entirety and along with Colin Roberts and Alison Roberts – Davies gave a demonstration of the beginning of a match as well as a discussion about the sport and opportunity to handle a brand new ball.
