Drake's Trail podcasts: about the making

The podcasts were made over an eight month period beginning in September 2008.

Aune Head Arts is the executive producer for the project, and commissioned artist Martin Prothero and producer Richard Povall to work on the project, along with students and staff at Tavistock College. We all began with a site visit in early September 2008, and from there the students began to look at maps of all kinds and spent more time out on Dartmoor investigating the sites. They worked in small groups and came up with the stories they wanted to hightlight by speaking to people, getting inspired by the many stories that surround the area from Elizabethan tales of derring-do to nineteenth-century railways and ghost stories, to farmers burying their massive potato crops (much bigger than today's) to preserve them over the winter, right up to the Second World War.

Working with Martin, everyone involved in the project began gathering sounds and interviews so that by the end of that year we had a huge collection of material recorded digitally. Martin and Richard then spent January and February pulling all this together into the podcasts that are available here.
