'The three CDs recorded for Soundings make very moving listening. At just under an hour each, they sensitively weave together the voices of young and old, responding to questions, recollecting stories, revealing concerns, voicing hopes and fears, laughing and singing. They offer an intimate insight into aspects of the frailties and strengths of old age, and reflect what was clearly an enriching shared experience for all of those involved.' Dartmoor Magazine December 2010.
The Soundings project, part of the regional Reach initiative, is now completed. The Reach initiative was part of an Arts Council England project where partnerships are forged between arts organisations and health partners. Aune Head Arts led on the Devon project in partnership with Villages in Action. There is a short video outlining the regional project here.
We're delighted that the quality of the project has been recognised by winning the Royal Society for Public Health's 2010 Arts & Health Award.
In Milton Abbot and in Princetown, artist Sue Palmer worked with both elderly and young people in the village to collect sound pieces about their lives. We also worked with artists Tony Walker in Milton Abbot, and Joff Winterhart in Princetown (recently runner up in the Observer 2009 Graphic Short Story Competition) who worked with animation to develop a different creative approach to the project. In Chudleigh, artists Jennie Hayes and Kate Green undertook work with older and younger people to explore issues of memory loss, ageing and mental well-being.
The audio programmes produced by the project have been published and are available in our shop. We are now seeking broadcast partners to bring the work to a broader audience.
In Chudleigh, a group formed through the project has continued to meet, and are continuing to get together socially, with new members joining too. We are hoping to be able to support them further with ongoing arts workshops in the future.
Meanwhile we are working with health partners to develop and fundraise for a follow-on from Soundings called EVA: going out live, a radio project in partnership with Soundart Radio which will support older people to create and produce their own radio programmes.

Soundings was a project of Aune Head Arts and Villages in Action and is part of the Reach regional arts and health project.
The project is working with a number of health partners, including Devon Older People's Mental Health Programme, Devon Partnership NHS Trust, North Devon Healthcare Trust, and Upstream Healthy Living Centre. The Reach regional project is also happening in Dorset, Somerset and Bristol and grew out of an initiative by Arts Council England.
